YESS Mentoring at West High School is off to a great start. The Mentors at West are an amazing group of young people. They’ve been busy applying to colleges, being inducted into National Honor Society, playing soccer for West, and earning a 4.2 GPA amongst many other accomplishments. They’ve also committed themselves to mentoring a struggling 9th grader at risk of dropping out.
Mentors participated in leadership trainings while 25 Mentees were identified. Once the Mentees joined our twice weekly meetings, Mentors attached to them very quickly. They couldn’t wait to begin building relationships and helping motivate their Mentees. One pair always arrives to meetings together and I’ve watched the Mentor walk his Mentee to class afterwards. This Mentor has said, “Ms., he never went to class after lunch. Now he does.” Two Mentees love attending YESS so much, they haven’t missed a meeting and even tried to attend the Mentor Training!
At this point, the energy and enthusiasm of the Mentors is just what the Mentees need to see as they contemplate investing in YESS and, in turn, themselves!
The YESS Mentoring Program Specialist at West High School is Emily Webster.
