Wrapping Up the Year at Shaw Heights
The YESS program at Shaw Heights Middle School finished the school year strong. Many mentees are preparing to be mentors in the 2016-2017 school year, and many mentors are saying goodbye to Shaw Heights Middle school. As we ended the school year, students learned more about how to be community leaders, recognizing injustice, and how to be self-advocates. Students participated in lessons that discussed macroaggressions, and how to recognize racial profiling. This unit left the students more socially conscious, and ready to “be the change they wish to see in the world.”
To end the year, we did an end of the year YESS celebration at the University of Colorado at Denver. Two students received a special award from the YESS Institute: Dominic H. was awarded Mentor of the year, and Josue C. was awarded mentee of the year. This evening was memorable and all students enjoyed being on a university campus.
In the final full week of school, the YESS students were very lucky to have a special guest in the classroom. On Monday May 16th, Colorado Rapids midfielder, Michael Azira assisted in the classroom. We did a powerful lesson on overcoming obstacle and challenges. In this lesson Michael gave great advice to the YESS students on perseverance and self-motivation.
Over all, the 2015-2016 school year was an amazing year full of learning moments, social and emotional growth, and many memories!
